Fox Point sits on larger, heavily wooded lots, and the housing reflects a different era and philosophy from the pre-war villages to the south. There is a strong mid-century presence here — long low rooflines, generous glazing, and interiors designed around natural materials rather than painted surfaces.
That changes what we are asked to do. In a 1920s Colonial the question is often what colour to paint the trim. In a Fox Point mid-century, the trim, the panelling and the built-ins are frequently timber that was specified to be visible, and the right work is refinishing rather than painting.
Exteriors here have their own character too. Mature tree cover keeps elevations damp for longer after rain and encourages mildew growth on north faces, while the gaps in the canopy let concentrated sun onto specific sections. It produces uneven weathering that a uniform repaint schedule does not really address.

We say this to Fox Point clients more than anywhere else: covering original timber with a painted finish is quick and easy, and reversing it later is a strip-and-refinish job measured in days per room.
Sometimes painting genuinely is the right answer — when the timber is mismatched, damaged, or so dark that the room is unusable. But if the wood is sound and worth showing, refinishing it usually gives a better result than painting, and it is what the house was designed around.
If you are undecided, we will prepare samples on offcuts of your own timber so you can see the actual outcome rather than imagining it. Refinished panelling often looks dramatically lighter and warmer than people expect once decades of ambered old finish come off.
