Painting and refinishing in Shorewood.

Dense, walkable, and largely built in the 1920s. Compact sites, close neighbours, and a lot of original detail worth saving.

Shorewood is the most tightly built of the North Shore villages, and that shapes the work more than the architecture does. Lots are narrow, houses sit close together, driveways are shared or absent, and street parking is genuinely competitive. A crew that has not worked here before tends to underestimate all of it.

The housing is predominantly 1920s: bungalows, Colonial Revivals, and a large stock of the two-flat duplexes that give the village its density. Many have been converted, subdivided or reconfigured over the last century, which means mixed-era trim within a single property is common.

The duplexes in particular generate steady interior work — turnover repaints between tenancies, where the priority is a clean, durable finish delivered inside a fixed window between one tenant leaving and the next arriving. That is a scheduling problem as much as a painting one.

Access is the real constraint

On tight Shorewood lots we plan access before we plan the paint: where the van sits, how materials come in, and how we work without blocking a shared drive or a neighbour’s access.

Working considerately

Your neighbours are eight feet away.

On a Shorewood lot, spraying is a neighbourly question as well as a technical one. Overspray does not respect a property line, and a fine mist of finish carried on a breeze onto the car next door is a genuinely expensive mistake.

Our answer is usually to take the sprayable components — doors, cabinet fronts, trim sections — back to the Glendale shop and finish them in controlled conditions. Everything that has to be done on site gets properly contained rather than optimistically sheeted.

Small kitchens are the other Shorewood constant. Cabinetry built into an awkward 1920s footprint often uses every inch available, and replacing it with standard units frequently means ending up with less storage than you started with. Refinishing keeps the fit and changes the finish.
